THE MASKS NIGHTMARE IN SCHOOLS
A policy is set aside for the regulation of Covid -19 in
primary, secondary and higher institutions.
It is mandatory for every student to have at least two masks as part of
measures to ward off covid-19, which led to closure of learning institutions 10
months ago. Students were necessarily not in school because of school fees arrears
but rather because of insufficient masks and other requirements needed to
control the pandemic. The ministry of education was in a race to procure masks
for over 10 million school-going children in the country. This plan was put in place but due to insufficient
funds, the plan did not make it to the other side of the bridge. Therefore students
were left with no choice, but to stay at home with their parents and guardians as
they wait for the covid-19 cases to reduce.
January 2021 arrives with expectations that students go back
to school to resume learning. On January 2nd 2021, students are
welcomed back to the various learning institutions with appropriate measures to
ward off covid 19 put in place. Hand washing and sanitizing equipment are put
in place purposing for the cleanliness and well-being of the organization in general.
This is done in both primary, secondary and colleges respectively without any
avoidance of the regulations set aside for covid-19.
It gets complicated for boarders who are supposed to have
enough masks to lasts for 11 weeks because there won’t be a mid-term break. Also
visits by parents or guardians are prohibited since it is assumed to be one of the
ways that coronavirus can spread. But as parents scramble to equip their
children, questions have emerged over whether to buy reusable cloth masks or
stick to the conventiontioal single- use masks. This concerned many parents
since not all of them are able to buy the conventional single-use masks because
of the economic climate that is hitting the country since the pandemic came.
Owing to increase demand, there are fears that prices will
rise. And parents will not be able to provide the required equipment to their
children to school, thus a challenge to the community. This has brought about a
question of what happened to the billions of shilling the Government had set
aside to buy masks to be distributed to learners.
Parents are reporting that they are having a hard time
finding masks that fit and are of the right quality. Wearing-ill-fitting and
poorly made masks could end up compromising the safety of learners. School managers
are also concerned about what steps to take in case learners show up without
masks. Thus posting a big challenge to the institutions since everyone is
worried about coronavirus and what it does to the m ye human race.
Parents argued that they were only told to buy masks because
it is part of school uniform has been stated by the Education Cabinet Secretary
George Magoha. To meet demand, enterprising tailors and uniform dealers have
started churning out “designer” face masks made of cloths that match the color
of the school uniforms.
The pandemic has left parents with no choice but to adhere
to what the ministry of education states mandatory for the easy running of the
schools during the pandemic. Students are forced to cope with the new normal
advent that push them to do what they were not used to. At least every child
has been accorded the right ways of warding off covid-19 in schools, thus hope
for a healthy institutions in the country
